Bauxite To Alumina Process

Our process

Alumina is the common name for the compound, aluminium oxide, which is extracted from bauxite using a four stage chemical process known as the Bayer process. How it works The Bayer process was invented by Austrian scientist Karl Josef Bayer in 1887.

The amount of red mud produced by an alumina refinery depended primarily on the bauxite types and alumina extraction process. The production rates of red mud were generally expressed in the tons of dry slag per ton of alumina produced and ranged from 0.7 to 2.0 [50], [51]. Global annual red mud emissions exceeded 150 million tons in 2021, and ...

The Bayer Process. The Bayer Process, which is used by about 80 active plants worldwide, is the primary method of producing aluminum from bauxite. Bauxite ore is dissolved in sodium hydroxide, or lye, at a high temperature and pressure. Then, the alumina and bauxite ores are separated by washing out the waste (red muds or sands) from the alumina.
