Polymeric sand is sand that has an adhesive in it. After you put it down, you wet it, and it adheres to itself. Thus the polymeric sand is a good idea, as long as you don't have over 1/2" gap between your pavers. If you do, the likelihood of it cracking like concrete is increased. It's great for blocking weeds, and won't wash away.
